Service Learning

Service learning was identified due to the lack of knowledge the youth had about their community, the service organizations available, the clients they serve and the benefits to those clients. Service Learning is implemented as part of each monthly Steering Committee Meeting.

In the fall of 2008 we arranged to meet with Fareshare Food Bank, the Oakville Parent Child Centre, Community Foundation of Oakville, and the Halton Police Department.

In the spring of 2009 we invited the following organizations to present; Community Arts Space, the Oakville Humane Society, The Community Foundation of Oakville and Safetynet.

This process of presentations allows the youth to become familiar with the social service organizations within their community that they were previously unaware of, and understand the needs of the clients they serve. It also provides an opportunity to gain a clear perspective of marginalized populations, and the issues surrounding important issues such as poverty, housing, mental health.

The youth are then better positioned to make decisions regarding the community service projects which they feel would best serve and benefit their community.
