Any newcomer youth interested in obtaining a coaching certificate, this course is for you!  If you like sports and working with kids, this program will help you be a great coach and make fun games for kids. You will learn about how kids:

 *WHAT IS THE NATIONAL COACHING CERTIFICATION PROGRAM? The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is an internationally recognized coach education program for coaching development in over 67 different sports. Sports rely on NCCP certification as a benchmark qualification for coaching assignments, both volunteer and paid positions.

The Newcomer Information Centre youth team is offering a FREE resume writing workshop at the central library for youth between the ages of 13-18.

Every second Saturday of the month, volunteers of CYAN have been having an “Afternoon Tea” with the wonderful Seniors at Northridge Long Term Care Residence. We play board games, make beaded jewellery and bookmarks, paint birdhouses, or celebrate upcoming holidays!

It is a special inter-generational project that allows the youth to learn from the experience and wisdom of our Seniors and vice-versa. It is about connecting and bringing the beauty and needs of the community together.  The youth love our monthly Afternoon Tea at Northridge and the Seniors look forward to our visits!

Since our Northridge visit in February is dedicated to Valentine’s Day, we decided to celebrate with special treats and we will be creating valentine day crafts and decorations!

It has been brought to our attention by university and college graduates across the country, that there is no “bridge” between education and employment.

For the past few years Donna Messer and ConnectUs have been offering training programs that help graduate students bridge the gap and find gainful employment in their areas of expertise.  For 2012, Donna is launching a new program for high school students. Bridging the Gap, is a systematic process they can learn that will provide the skills they needed to find that summer job or that co-op placement.

They will learn:

• Ten rules for effective networking
• The importance of social media – LinkedIn, Facebook, Blogging
• How to use lateral thinking
• How to make the first minute count
• How to work a room
• How to follow-up

Donna Messer is one of Canada’s foremost networking experts. She is the author of the Canadian best seller, Effective Networking Strategies. Her networking training has been added to the curriculum of colleges and universities, boardrooms and government offices throughout the Canada, the United States and Europe. She combines interactive training and strategic planning, providing systematic techniques that can be immediately used and measured.

Saturday, February 18th from 7:30pm-9:00pm, CYAN is holding it’s 2nd Annual Fun Skate! This year we are doing something a little different, we are incorporating a skate drive! We hope to collect enough skates for our event to be sold at $5 a pair and the left over skates will be donated to Safetynet Children’s Charities.
 
What we are asking of your school group is to:
 
-Approach student council to support a skate drive for our Feb. 18th FUN SKATE EVENT
 
-Pick a day between now and then to collect as many GENTLY used skates (children and adult sizes)
 
-Arrange for boxes or bins at your school to be placed at your school guidance office (or wherever the best spot would be in your schools).
 
-Arrange a FRIDAY for a pick up date, you will have to notify us which date and time that would be so we can come by to pick the skates up from your school. (email michelle@thecyan.org or info@thecyan.org)
 
**Skates will be sold for $5.00 each at the days event Feb. 18th and all skates not sold will be donated to Safetynet Children’s Charity and Big Brothers Big Sisters to family and children in need.                                                                                    
 
-All school groups which take on the FUN SKATE – Skate Drive at your schools will receive 6 hours of volunteer time.  We will forward to the groups a volunteer tracking sheet via email once skates are picked up from your schools.
 
Attached is a copy of the Fun Skate poster, you may use this when approaching your student council/guidance office, as well as use to post around your school.

We invite you to come and enjoy musical entertainment provided by students of Sheridan College’s Performing Arts Program and performers from Massive Tank Studios.

Community Youth in Action Network will also be having a bake sale. The money collected will help us to continue to fund our intergenerational project with Northridge. We are looking for any volunteers who have a passion for baking and would like to assist with baking Christmas goodies to be sold at the event.

Items should be dropped off at Northridge the day of at 1:30 pm and we will sign your volunteer forms when items are dropped off to us. 

*It is important that you let us know what you plan to bake! We would prefer NUT FREE items and if the recipe could be included on the wrapped items that would be best.  Anything with NUTS would have to be clearly labeled.
